HIBBING - The Dupont Building, a former power house that stood on the shore of Carey Lake for more than a century, is now history.

The hollowed, artful structure was demolished last week by local contractor Bougalis and Sons Construction.

The razing came as a surprise - and dismay - to many, including city staff, as demolition work was slated to begin Feb. 20 according to contract between the city and the contractor, said City Engineer Jesse Story.

While it was publicly known the Dupont was slated for demo, most had yet to visit the site, reminisce and say their goodbyes first. A few, however, did make it out there, and at least one person carved a name in the deteriorating concrete before it was reduced to rubble.

Members of the city's Heritage Preservation Committee had asked the city to hold off razing the building in December, as a means to buy time and seek a way to save the building.

Tight on funds and with questions of how structurally sound it was, the committee conceded that it needed to come down, but requested that it somehow be recognized as a historical site.

There was some discussion by councilors of trying to save the Dupont logo in January for an additional cost, but they decided against it because of funding and questions on whether the piece could be salvaged due to a crack through it.

Councilors also continually expressed concerns over safety and liability surrounding the structure.

The demolition was an anticipated cost of $13,300, including crushing on site, and was made possible in part by a grant. The city had received $8,866 toward the project from a Community Development grant from Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB).

The monies were part of an larger grant - totaling $136,000 to the city of Hibbing - for the demolition of five projects. The Dupont Building was the council's No. 1 priority, and was the last to be razed.

There are plans to build some sort of historical mark or sign to commemorate the Dupont Building on the site.

Elected officials and economic development persons have also stated that the city plans to make Carey Lake more of a recreational area, including a possible campground, in the future.

In a survey of 3,500 people, a University of Connecticut team discerned that 34 percent of Americans trying to lose weight are using supplements - an encouraging indicator for the dietary supplement industry.

The survey, funded by pharmaceutical giant Glaxo Smith Kline, was conducted nationwide from November 2005 to January 2006. Nearly half of the respondents, or 1,444 people, said they had made a serious attempt to lose weight at some point in time for at least three days. Of these, approximately one third said they used supplements while only 15 percent used prescription drugs.

The results are encouraging for Nutraceutical Manufacturers: Use of Dietary Supplements and Herbal Products came in third place, behind self-directed exercise( 90%) and dieting (72%).

Chocolate Chip Cookies - Low Carb
Choc Chip Cookies:

* 1 cup almond meal
* 1 cup vanilla whey protein powder
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1 cup butter -- softened (2 sticks)
* 1/2 cup Splenda granular OR Stevia
* 3/4 cup Steel's Gourmet Sugar Substitute (Maltitol)*
* 2 eggs
* 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
* 2 cups CarbSmart Sugar Free Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
* 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

The Chocolate Chips are polyol-free, but this recipe calls for maltitol. You can substitute 3/4 cup extra Splenda plus a teaspoon of molasses if you want a polyol-free cookie - the cookies will be a little crumblier, but will taste fine.

Measure the almond meal, vanilla whey protein, baking soda, baking powder, and salt, and stir together. Set aside.

Using an electric mixer, beat the butter till creamy and fluffy. Add the Splenda and maltitol, and beat till very well combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Add the eggs and vanilla, and beat well.

Now add the dry ingredients, in three additions, beating each addition till well incorporated before adding the next.

Beat in the chocolate chips and pecans, and mix just until well-distributed.

Turn off mixer, and scrape the dough off the beaters back into the bowl.

Preheat oven to 375.

Scoop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto cookie sheets you've sprayed with non-stick cooking spray, or covered with pan liners or baking parchment.

Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes. Cool on wire racks.

Yeild: 44 cookies, each with: 125 Calories, 9g Fat, 6g Protein, 6g Total Carbohydrates*, 3g Dietary Fiber*. *Net Carbs per cookie 3 grams.

Peanut Energy Bars

Makes 16 bars

Ingredients

½ cup dry roasted salted peanuts
½ cup roasted sunflower seeds or other chopped nuts
2 cups raisins or other chopped dried fruit
2 cups rolled or instant oats
2 cups toasted rice cereal, such as Rice Krispies
¼ cup toasted wheat germ (optional)
½ cup creamy or crunchy natural peanut butter
½ cup packed brown sugar
½ cup light corn syrup or honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Coat an 9-by-13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
2. Combine peanuts, sunflower seeds (or other nuts), raisins (or other dried fruit), oats, rice cereal and wheat germ (if using) in a large bowl.
3. Combine peanut butter, brown sugar and corn syrup (or honey) in a large microwaveable bowl; microwave on High until bubbling, 1 to 2 minutes. Add vanilla and stir until blended. Pour the peanut butter mixture over the dry ingredients and stir until coated.
4. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan. Press down firmly. (It helps to coat your fingers with cooking spray.) Let stand for about 1 hour to harden. Cut into bars.

Greek Garbanzo Bean Salad

Use canned garbanzo beans to make this an easy-to-prepare tasty Meditlerranean-style salad in a matter of minutes.

Prep and Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

1 15 oz can garbanzo beans, preferably organic
2 cloves garlic
sea salt and pepper to taste
2/3 cup minced green onion
1 medium tomato, diced
3 TBS parsley, minced
2 TBS extra virgin olive oil
1 TBS fresh lemon juice
Optional: 1/4 cup feta cheese
1 head romaine lettuce

Directions:

Press or mince garlic and let sit for at least 5 minutes to bring out its hidden health benefits.
Drain liquid from garbanzo beans and rinse under cold running water; this helps prevent intestinal gas.
Mince green onions.
Dice tomatoes.
Mince parsley

Quick Broiled Chicken Breast with Honey Mustard Sauce Recipe

This special honey-mustard sauce enhances the flavor of the chicken breast, while serving it with spinach adds even more nutrition to this great-tasting recipe. Enjoy!

Prep and Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

4 boneless, chicken breasts with skin
2+1 TBS fresh lemon juice
1 ½ cups chicken broth
2 ½ TBS honey
2 TBS Dijon mustard
¼ cup sliced dried apricots
2 TBS coarsely chopped walnuts
1 TBS chopped parsley
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Quick Broiled Chicken

Preheat the broiler on high and place an all stainless steel skillet (be sure the handle is also stainless steel) or cast iron pan about 6 inches from the heat for about 10 minutes to get it very hot.
While the pan is heating, rinse and pat the chicken dry and season with 2TBS lemon juice, salt and pepper.
Leaving the skin on, place the breast (skin side up) on the hot pan. It is not necessary to turn the breast because it is cooking on both sides at once. Depending on the size, it should be cooked in about 7 minutes. Begin preparing the sauce.
The breast is done when it is moist, yet its liquid runs clear when pierced. The inside temperature needs to reach 165 degrees farenheit or 74 degrees celcius. Remove the skin before serving; it is left on to keep it moist while broiling.

Honey-Mustard Sauce

For honey-mustard sauce, combine broth, 1TBS lemon juice, honey, and mustard in a small saucepan. Whisk together and bring to a boil on high heat. Once it comes to a boil, simmer for about 20 minutes. You want it to be reduced to a little less than half the volume you start with. This will thicken and intensify the flavor.
Add apricots and cook on high for another 5 minutes. When sauce is done add chopped walnuts, parsley, salt and pepper.
Serve over cooked spinach or other cooked greens. Serves 4

Body Trim Weight Loss Diet Update:

I have been learning a lot about my body and foods that work best with me. Tonight (March 9th 2009) I had 5 oz of Tilapia, 15 spears of asparagus, 1 small tomato, 1 green onion. I cooked all foods together with about 2 cups of water, Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar and Braggs Aminos ( I love them), garlic, 1/2 fresh squeezed lemon and cayenne pepper. YUMMO!

In all it was about 250 calories and so very healthy! About 45 minutes before dinner I had a Body Trim. It really aides in hunger. I am very happy with my ACT and Body Trim!

I started my weight loss diary on February 3, 2009 and since that date I have lost 20 lbs! I have MANY more lbs to go. The first time in my life I feel that I can 'conquer' my fears and lose the weight!

My story is I have lost as of today a total of 75 pounds! I started off at 280 pounds and this morning I am down to 205 pounds. I am very close to my weight when I was in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Just talked with Katie K. in Arizona. She has always struggled with her weight and she tries to watch what she eats, however last night her and her husband decided to go out and treat them selves to a nice Mexican dinner.
